John and Laura Ramsey write: Imperial Topaz

gem pictures 006

November brings thoughts of fall colors to many and thoughts of fall colors in Imperial Topaz to gem collectors. Imperial topaz is the true November birthstone. Imperial is currently mined primarily in the state of Minas Gerais Brazil. The original deposits were found in Russia and got the Imperial sobriquet due to the fact that Russia was an empire at the time. If there is currently a production in the Urals that fact is not well known here in the West.

The colors associated with Imperial topaz range in price low to high: straw yellow, orange, orange with reddish overtones, reddish orange, and finally red with a touch of orange. Prices can vary from a few hundred dollars per-carat on up to thousands of dollars per-carat.
